Custom Orthotics Burnaby: Who Needs It?

Many people think that those who have foot pain need custom orthotic insoles. This is true but not all. Patients who suffer from plantar fasciitis, heel inflammation, unknown ankle swelling/pain, Morton’s neuroma, ulcers from diabetes on foot, or any gait problems mainly need orthotics for their foot pain.

Here are major conditions that can benefit from custom orthotics

Custom Orthotics Burnaby: Gait is Closely Related to Your Spine Health

However, many patients who suffer from lower back pain, mid back pain, neck pain, headache, hip pain, knee pain, and postural imbalance that originate from gait (walking) movement. For example, not all patients with decreased arch would have foot pain (even though many of them do). Many of them may have swelling ankle without any reason or sprain, knee pain without injuries, hip pain fluctuations, or any spine level pain.

If a patient has a decreased arch on the foot, the angle of the ankle will shift inward like shown in the photo. As a result, angle of the knee will move towards medial side making knees L shape (knock knee). And this can create abnormal pressure on knee meniscus, cartilage, or tendon/ligament, resulting in sprains/strains/tears. If you have pain on any part of lower extremities without any reason, please consult with our chiropractor to assess your gait analysis.

Custom Orthotics Burnaby: Why Chiropractor for Custom Orthotics?

You may ask why chiropractors are the one who can diagnose and dispense custom orthotics since they specialized in spine but not the foot. The reason is simple; many cases of foot pain is not an isolated condition but interwoven between foot, leg, hip, and all the way up to spine. They move in synchronized motion when we walk, run, and move around.

Chiropractors assess and try to restore balance of whole spine and consider all these information when they assess the movement and balance of patient’s feet. They believe it is important to restore balance of not only patients’ feet but also synchronized motion balance of whole body.

Another reason for choosing a chiropractor for custom orthotics is that they restore good movement of the spine before and after they try to adjust the balance of the foot. Many professional chiropractors would like to balance patient’s whole body movements before they would even recommend custom orthotics for this reason especially if they diagnose the condition of spine affecting the movement of the lower extremity.

Custom Orthotics Burnaby: Any Side Effect?

You may have heard that custom orthotics have caused increased pain on some cases and their bad experience about custom orthotics news spread widely. But what causing increased pain for some patients while the custom orthotics seem to help others?

Custom orthotics are not simply designed for comfort but to restore the balance of the body. Sometimes, this re-balancing of the whole body can cause sudden impact on joints, muscles, and nerves while you wear this especially in the first few days to weeks. Most symptoms arise in the first few days or weeks because these are the periods where the re-balancing happens the most rapid rate and your body may not adapt to the new balance as fast as the orthotics change the balance in your body.

For example, a patient who has been suffering from a foot pain due to decreased arch of the right foot for a long period time would have a body balance that is adapted to the condition. If she/he starts wearing orthotics, they will cause major shifts in balance not only on their feet but also on their whole body. If their arch is raised by orthotics suddenly, the angle on your foot, ankle, knee, hip, and spine all changes simultaneously which can cause some pain.

Then, should you give up wearing orthotics?

The answer is no. Do not give up just because you experienced some discomfort or pain after you wearing custom orthotics because this may be the sign that your body needed this re-balancing from a long time ago.

When you first receive the custom orthotics, try to wear gradually. For instance, wear it for just one hour on the first day and if there is no pain or discomfort, wear it two hours next day. If you experience any discomfort or pain after the first hour, increase the time by 30 minutes instead of 1 hour. This way, you are giving your body the time to get used to the new changes and significantly reducing the probability of flare up of body reactions.

If you experience some discomfort or pain when your first using the orthotics, this can be a sign that there are significant changes happening on your body. While you are gradually increasing the time of wearing it and monitor your body and let your chiropractor know about it. It may give useful information to your chiropractor that where the problems are originating from.
